Not long after airplanes were first invented and flown, the idea of flight took over the imagination of the public. Forward thinking writers and artists envisioned homes built around all sorts of flying machines, an airplane in every home garage, ready to whisk you off to destinations near and far.

Well, it didn’t quite turn out that way, no matter how romantic the idea, the practical realities intervened. Those bitten by the aero bug, didn’t change their minds and flying everyday was as tantalizing as ever but it became a lot more regulated and expensive. Faced with the actual need to learn how to fly, some found it too intimidating or complex, some questioned the need and flying became a commercial convenience for travelers but not the avocation many had hoped.

Some, however, never lost their interest in and passion for airplanes. Whether private pilot, home builder or armchair enthusiast, aviation remains an everyday interest.
