What was that about an airplane in your garage? The idea of having a multipurpose vehicle in everyone’s garage was all the rage back in the early 20th century and magazines like Popular Science or Modern Mechanix were constantly reporting on the latest attempt or drawing board dream.

The Terrafugia Transition, however, is no dream, it actually flies, after several years of development it took off on March 9th and flew without incident, which is what every test pilot wants to report. The 2 seat, carbon fiber bodied roadable aircraft is powered by a 100 horsepower Rotax engine, driving the front wheels in land mode, a pusher prop in the air.

Weighing under 890 pounds their aim is to allow light sport aircraft licensing, keeping the potential pool of pilot owners as large as possible. Cruise is 115 mph, fully loaded it comes in at 1320 pounds.

It may be a while before it’s ready for the market but this company is making real progress, which is a lot more than most earlier attempts could say.

Not long after airplanes were first invented and flown, the idea of flight took over the imagination of the public. Forward thinking writers and artists envisioned homes built around all sorts of flying machines, an airplane in every home garage, ready to whisk you off to destinations near and far.

Well, it didn’t quite turn out that way, no matter how romantic the idea, the practical realities intervened. Those bitten by the aero bug, didn’t change their minds and flying everyday was as tantalizing as ever but it became a lot more regulated and expensive. Faced with the actual need to learn how to fly, some found it too intimidating or complex, some questioned the need and flying became a commercial convenience for travelers but not the avocation many had hoped.

Some, however, never lost their interest in and passion for airplanes. Whether private pilot, home builder or armchair enthusiast, aviation remains an everyday interest.

Everyday Airplanes will bring you a comprehensive list of airplanes for sale, all sorts of aviation related items and a bit of aviation news mixed in. We hope you enjoy what you find here and we’ll try to keep things fresh and exciting. Thanks, for stopping by!
